„Ziel des Staatspreises ist es, die vielfältigen gestalterischen, ökologischen und wirtschaftlichen Potenziale des Baustoffs Holz sichtbar zu machen und seine Rolle für eine klimafitte Baukultur in Österreich zu stärken“, so auf der offiziellen Website. Die 41 Nominierungen ergaben sich aus den Preisträgern der Holzbaupreise, die von 2023 bis 2025 in allen neun Bundesländern vergeben wurden. Die internationale Jury – bestehend aus Nicole Kerstin Berganski (Juryvorsitzende, Architektin, Professorin TU Berlin), Annette Hafner (Architektin, Professorin Ruhr-Universität Bochum) und Pirmin Jung (Tragwerksplaner) – reiste zu ausgewählten Projekten im ganzen Land und wählte anschließend drei Hauptpreisträger und zwei Anerkennungen. Zwei der Projekte sind zudem für den europäischen WoodPoP Dara Award nominiert der im Herbst 2026 erstmals verliehen wird.

Der Staatspreis Holzbau wurde vom BMLUK in Kooperation mit proHolz Austria ausgelobt. Er ist mit Mitteln des österreichischen Waldfonds gefördert und wird künftig alle vier Jahr vergeben. At the end of May 2026, the Austrian State Prize for Timber Construction was awarded for the first time. The Sofiensäle in Vienna provided a fitting setting for the ceremony honouring outstanding timber buildings at national level. “The aim of the State Prize is to highlight the diverse creative, ecological and economic potential of wood as a building material and to strengthen its role in a climate-friendly building culture in Austria,” according to the official website. The 41 nominations were drawn from the winners of the timber construction awards presented in all nine federal states between 2023 and 2025. The international jury – comprising Nicole Kerstin Berganski (jury chair, architect, professor at TU Berlin), Annette Hafner (architect, professor at Ruhr University Bochum) and Pirmin Jung (structural engineer) – visited selected projects across the country and subsequently selected three main prize winners and two honourable mentions. Two of the projects have also been nominated for the European WoodPoP Dara Award, which will be presented for the first time in autumn 2026.

The State Prize for Timber Construction was established by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLUK) in cooperation with proHolz Austria. It is funded by the Austrian Forest Fund and will be awarded every four years from now on. The Austrian State Prize for Timber Construction recognises timber buildings that exemplify the combination of high architectural and spatial planning standards with the ecological, resource-efficient and innovative use of timber as a building material.
