Damit sollen Impulse für Innovationen in der holzbasierten Wertschöpfungskette gesetzt werden. Zudem werden neue Produkte im Sinne der Bioökonomie und Kreislaufwirtschaft forciert. Technische Lösungen, Verfahren und Dienstleistungen sollen einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Ressourcen- und Energiewende leisten und gleichzeitig die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der heimischen Unternehmen erhöhen und Arbeitsplätze in den Regionen sichern.

Insgesamt stehen für Maßnahmen der stofflichen und energetischen Nutzung von Holz rund 93 Millionen Euro aus dem Österreichischen Waldfonds zur Verfügung.

Eine der Maßnahmen im Rahmen der Holzinitiative ist die „verstärkte Verwendung des Rohstoffes Holz“ (Maßnahme 9). Damit sollen der Holzbau und die diesbezügliche Forschung, Entwicklung und Innovation vorangetrieben werden. Zugleich soll Holz als Grund- und Baustoff zur Substitution von CO2-intensiven Stoffen und zur Speicherung von CO2 in Holzbauten vermehrt zum Einsatz kommen.

Im Rahmen der Maßnahme 9 wird vom österreichischen Bundesministerium eine anteilige Förderung gewährt

• für Maßnahmen zur Forcierung der Verwendung von Holz aus nachhaltiger Waldwirtschaft sowie 
• zur Errichtung von für Wohnzwecke oder öffentliche Zwecke genutzten Gebäuden sowie öffentliche Infrastruktur in Holzbauweise mit einem hohen Anteil an nachwachsenden Rohstoffen aus nachhaltiger Bewirtschaftung.
