„Gemeinsam mit BürgerInnen, gut 1000 Teilnehmenden und über 500 PartnerInnen aus Praxis und Forschung feiern wir 16 Tage lang innovative Lösungen für das Weiterbauen unserer Städte. Uns ist es wichtig zu zeigen, dass nachhaltige Städte auch sozial und ökonomisch funktionieren können“, erklärt Projektdirektor Dr. Daniel Lorberg von der Bergischen Universität Wuppertal.

Weltweiter Wettbewerb erstmals in Deutschland

Der renommierte Solar Decathlon-Wettbewerb wurde 2002 in den USA ins Leben gerufen. Mittlerweile findet er regelmäßig in Europa, Afrika, Asien, Zentralamerika und im Nahen Osten statt. Mit Wuppertal kommt der Hochschulwettbewerb zu seinem 20-jährigen Jubiläum erstmals nach Deutschland, gefördert vom Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie. Organisiert wird der Wettbewerb von einem Projektteam der Bergischen Universität Wuppertal in Kooperation mit der Stadt Wuppertal, dem Wuppertal Institut, der WSW, der Utopiastadt gGmbH und der Neuen Effizienz.

Häuser zum Anschauen und Anfassen

18 Hochschulteams aus 11 Ländern treten beim Wettbewerb in zehn Disziplinen miteinander, aber auch gegeneinander an. Bereits seit mehr als zwei Jahren arbeiten die Teams an ihren Entwürfen. 2022 gibt es beim Finale dann den Praxistest: Alle Teams bauen Teile ihrer Hausentwürfe in Wuppertal auf. Auf den ersten Blick wirken die ca. 100 m² großen Gebäude vielleicht wie eigenartige Einfamilienhäuser. Die 18 Bauten zeigen jedoch Beispiele für die Transformation großer urbaner Gebäude. „Die vollständige Kette aus Planen, Bauen und Betreiben macht den entscheidenden Unterschied zu üblichen Architekturwettbewerben. Hier zählen nicht nur gute Ideen, sondern auch deren Umsetzung bis ins Detail“, betont Wettbewerbsdirektor Prof. Karsten Voss.

Der Deutsche Holzbau lobt im Rahmen des internationalen Hochschulwettbewerbs ,Solar Decathlon Europe’ in Wuppertal unter den Teilnehmern einen gesonderten Preis für innovative Wohn- und Energiekonzepte mit Holz aus – den ‚Timber Construction Award’.

10.-26. Juni 2022: Live in Wuppertal dabei sein!

Neben dem eigentlichen Wettbewerbsgeschehen gibt es Vorträge, Diskussionsrunden und Ausstellungen, in denen der Diskurs zur urbanen und energieeffizienten Transformation fortgeführt wird. Konzerte, ein internationaler Foodcorner sowie zahlreiche kulturelle Veranstaltungen ergänzen das abwechslungsreiche Programm.

Solar Decathlon 2021/22

From 10 to 26 June 2022, the international competition will take place in Wuppertal, Germany

In one year, the wait will be over. From 10 June 2022, interested people in Wuppertal will be able to experience what sustainable building and living in the city can look like. At the finals of the Solar Decathlon Europe 21/22 (SDE 21/22) competition, university teams from all over the world will present their buildings for sustainable change in cities.

"Together with citizens, more than 1000 participants and over 500 partners from practice and research, we will celebrate innovative solutions for continuing to build our cities for 16 days. It is important to us to show that sustainable cities can also function socially and economically," explains project director Dr. Daniel Lorberg from the University of Wuppertal.

Worldwide competition in Germany for the first time

The renowned Solar Decathlon competition was launched in the USA in 2002. In the meantime, it regularly takes place in Europe, Africa, Asia, Central America and the Middle East. With Wuppertal, the university competition is coming to Germany for the first time on its 20th anniversary, sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The competition is organised by a project team from the University of Wuppertal in cooperation with the City of Wuppertal, the Wuppertal Institute, WSW, Utopiastadt gGmbH and Neue Effizienz.

Houses to look at and touch

18 university teams from 11 countries compete with each other in ten disciplines, but also against each other. The teams have been working on their designs for more than two years. In 2022, the final will be a practical test: All teams will build parts of their house designs in Wuppertal. At first glance, the buildings, which measure around 100 m², may seem like peculiar single-family homes. However, the 18 buildings show examples of the transformation of large urban buildings. "The complete chain of planning, building and operating makes the decisive difference to usual architectural competitions. What counts here is not only good ideas, but also their implementation down to the last detail," emphasises competition director Prof. Karsten Voss.
As part of the international university competition 'Solar Decathlon Europe' in Wuppertal, the German Timber Construction Association is offering a special prize for innovative living and energy concepts with wood - the 'Timber Construction Award'.

10-26 June 2022: Be there live in Wuppertal!

In addition to the actual competition events, there will be lectures, discussion rounds and exhibitions to continue the discourse on urban and energy-efficient transformation. Concerts, an international food corner and numerous cultural events complete the varied programme.
